The db files might have mattered 25 years ago on a busy > system but they seem to be an anachronism now. In my experience, as logins go, only passwd would (in certain corner cases) actually need a DB if any, the rest of the files would only have a small handful of entries anyhow. I've run openbsd systems with some 180k+ users in passwd, but groups or login.conf entries were still very small. -- May the most significant bit of your life be positive.
