I think this problem is being explained overly dramatically.  Strings
that long don't occur, ever.

I'm not excited about the heuristic parts of the diff.

Can we change the vis functions to all return size_t instead of int,
without any real userland breakage?  It would be snuck into the next
libc ABI crank.

The internals are easy to change.
