I only want to throw into the discussion that it seems that
OpenBSD vi does not support "bracketed paste mode".  You possibly
want to add that too, to avoid random stuff happening from
pasting.  Ie, if you use vim, try ":help xterm-bracketed-paste"
(and do not be afraid), or look Thomas Dickey's page.  (Asking
Nicholas Marriot seems natural, too.)
I implemented it for my MUA (finally) in November 2023, though not
released yet.  Much better!!
