Checkout the full tree in /usr/src.  Apply patches.
And then rebuild and install Perl:

    cd /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/perl
    make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper obj
    make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper
    make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper install

Afterwards you can run the Perl test suite like this:

    cd /usr/src/regress/gnu/usr.bin/perl
    make regress
