I can  confirm that with "traditional"  vi, that the !)fmt  does work as
expected from any column on the first  line. I think vi(1) in OpenBSD is
misbehaving in  this regard (as  I hinted at  earlier). I can  test your
patch later if someone doesn't beat me to it.
