As far as I understand, reception of 80 MHz wide frames is mandatory in 11ac
mode. There is nothing in VHT capabilities which would disable the use of
40 MHz and 80 MHz.
An 11ac AP could at any time decide to send frames using 40 MHz or 80 MHz
width. Would the driver receive such frames with this diff?

It is unclear to me. Maybe the firmware will still receive such frames even
in VHT20 mode, just not send them. Or maybe the AP will not see an ACK for
such frames and retry at 20 MHz eventually, masking the problem.

In any case, wouldn't it make more sense to add support for 40 MHz
channels in 11n mode before worrying about 11ac?
