I think it makes sense, as does doing it this way with a separate if block (it's somewhat similar to IMAP, but different enough that the conditionals would make it hard to read if done as one block with variations). OpenSSL already has this, and also irc ldap mysql nntp postgres telnet xmpp-server, in addition to the ones we both have: ftp imap lmtp pop3 xmpp smtp. (even the non-text-based protocols are useful to have for checking certificates, if not for actual protocol debugging). FWIW ok sthen.
