5.40.0 from this .tar.gz has been my system perl on macppc for more
than a month and on amd64 for a few days.  My amd64 with 5.40.0 also
ran dpb(1) to build my favorite ports (and all their dependencies).
Works for me.

I have not built release(8) sets with 5.40.0.  I also don't know
whether other people are ready for 5.40.0 right now.
